The Houston Astros received a bad prediction on one of their potential offseason targets from Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly, whose recent article predicts the landing spot of each MLB team’s top free agent this winter.

All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million contract with the Boston Red Sox last offseason. But with his stellar play this year, he’s likely to opt out of the last two years of his deal and hit the open market.

While Kelly knows there will be several suitors for Bregman, he ultimately predicts the 10-year Major League veteran will re-sign with the Red Sox this winter.

Why is Bregman predicted to re-sign with Boston?

Here is part of Kelly’s reasoning for his prediction:

“But for as much as it feels like the Red Sox almost have too much position talent, they moved on from Rafael Devers and manager Alex Cora has a long-standing relationship with Bregman dating back to their time in Houston,” he writes.

“There will be other suitors, but the Red Sox should be seen as the favorites for Bregman.”

Bregman is having his best season in years, slashing .286/.370/.494 with 16 home runs and 53 RBI over 93 games. He made his first All-Star team this year since 2019 and is still a solid defender at third base.

Plus, he’s a two-time World Series champion whose veteran presence could be helpful for years to come as Boston’s young core continues to develop.

But Bregman did spend the first nine seasons of his career with the Astros. If Houston offers him enough money, would he be willing to return?

Astros fans will have to wait and see if Kelly’s prediction is correct.
