The Houston Astros are scouring the market for starting pitching help after losing Framber Valdez to free agency, and facing a lot of rotation questions with the current crop of starters on the roster.

While they're not likely to re-sign Valdez this winter, the Astros are still involved in the rotation market. It's a crowded market, and the Astros are involved.

According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, despite letting Valdez walk, the Astros are still "in the mix" for the top-tier of starting pitching talent this offseason.

Astros 'in the mix' for top-tier starting pitching options this winter

"The Houston Astros are in the mix," Passan noted of the Astros' interest in the top-tier starting pitching market.

There were a few names mentioned in this tier that the Astros are keeping tabs on. While Valdez isn't likely an option, Tatsuya Imai, Ranger Suarez, Michael King, and Zac Gallen are all names to watch this offseason.

Houston might not sign any of this group, and look to the mid-tier of the trade market to find a new starter. However, Passan's mention of the Astros showing interest is a noteworthy update to keep in mind as the offseason progresses.

Alongside the Astros involved in this market are the Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees, New York Mets, Los Angeles Angels, Chicago Cubs, and San Diego Padres. And a mystery team cannot be ruled out yet either.

With more teams in need than pitchers available, the Astros might have to act fast to land one of the top pitchers available.

While there are trade options like MacKenzie Gore, Freddy Peralta, Luis Severino, and Edward Cabrera, among others, the Astros would be better off getting a free agent starter.

The Astros haven't been linked to Imai, and don't seem likely to re-sign Valdez. Suarez, Gallen, and King are the most likely top-tier options for Houston, and Passan expects their market to heat up soon.

Houston may soon find a resolution to its rotation needs, as the free agent starting pitching market is expected to heat up in the coming days and weeks.
