Despite working as the backup catcher for the Houston Astros over the last two seasons, Victor Caratini has proved to be a vital piece of the roster. He has been used behind the dish, at first base, and designated hitter, and has produced solid numbers offensively.
The switch-hitter was two games shy of tying his career-high for games played this past season with 114. Houston values him, and it will be interesting to see just how much they value him.
Caratini will become a free agent when the season comes to a close. If the Astros want to keep their man, they are going to have to outspend others who view having a catcher/first base option at their disposal.
Astros encouraged to re-sign productive veteran bat in free agency
While Astros fans will want to see Framber Valdez return, that may not be feasible. He will generate a ton of interest, and teams could start a bidding war to acquire his services.
Instead of focusing on something that might not be attainable, Houston should focus on signing guys who will not break the bank. Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller believes Caratini is the free agent the team should prioritize bringing back.
"Re-signing Framber Valdez would be great, but finding the $200 million to do so doesn't seem feasible. For Caratini, it's probably more like $5 million, but he gave them a.263 batting average over the past two seasons, including a career-high 12 home runs in 2025."
Re-signing Caratini gives the club an option to rest Yainer Diaz, and gives them an option at first base as well. While it is not the sexiest pick, losing him would require the team to search for another veteran backstop.
