The Detroit Tigers have been the subject of the most trade rumors this offseason, as teams are predicted to be clamoring for a chance to acquire two-time Cy Young starter Tarik Skubal.
Even with a ridiculously high asking price, a Skubal trade cannot be ruled out just yet. If the Tigers do move on from Skubal, they will have a huge void to fill in the rotation.
Former MLB GM Jim Bowden of The Athletic predicted that, if Skubal is traded, the Tigers would turn to Japanese ace Tatusya Imai for a huge $154 million contract to replace Skubal in 2026 and beyond.
Tigers predicted to sign Tatsuya Imai as potential Tarik Skubal replacement
"Tatsuya Imai signs with the Detroit Tigers on a 7-year, $154 million contract," Bowden predicted. "The Tigers might lose Skubal and are waiting on the return of Jackson Jobe from Tommy John surgery, but they get a top-shelf arm to help them make another run at a World Series."
Bowden's prediction is a two-parter, as his Iami $154 million prediction with the Tigers relies upon Skubal being dealt as part of the pitcher exchange.
Moving on from Skubal is a controversial decision, but if the return package is too good to pass up, trading Skubal can be justified.
But, if it coincides with a long-term contract for Iami, or another top free agent, then a Skubal trade could look even better. Trading Skubal for an incredible haul, and a free agent like Imai wouldn't be the worst outcome for Detroit this winter.
More: Why Tarik Skubal is still Tigers' best offseason trade candidate
Imai is a fascinating ace from Japan, who had a 1.92 ERA in 24 starts for the Seibu Lions this past season. In 163.2 innings pitched, Imai struck out 178 batters and walked 45. His 0.892 WHIP is also very encouraging, as he rarely allows baserunners.
At 27 years old, Imai is a bit younger than Skubal and coming off a Skubal-esque season in NPB. His $154 million predicted contract would likely be half that of Skubal's new deal next winter as well.
While this two-part offseason move might not be the most popular among fans, the Tigers could explain it as getting a pitcher who's close to Skubal's dominance on a cheaper deal, along with the huge return for the two-time Cy Young in a potential trade.
Detroit landing Imai would be a great signing, even if it comes in the wake of or alongside a Skubal trade. The Japanese right-hander would be a great pickup, especially at the price Bowden predicts.
