The Detroit Tigers have been the best team in the American League all season long. They also hold a 12-game lead in the AL Central over the Cleveland Guardians to start July.

After selling at last year's trade deadline, they will likely be buyers this summer. They got hot after selling and remain one of Major League Baseball's top teams.

The back end of their starting rotation could use a little bit of work, as they haven't gotten much out of Alex Cobb.

Brendan Strieker of FanSided proposed the idea of Detroit plucking Erick Fedde from the St. Louis Cardinals.

"The Tigers have been one of MLB's best teams all season long and are primed to have a big deadline. While Fedde is far from a splash of a move, they are a team that could use help in the back end of their rotation. Detroit's starting pitchers have thrown the 8th-fewest innings in baseball," Strieker wrote.

Fedde is a low-cost, middle-of-the-rotation starter that could generate plenty of interest despite his struggles this season. He is 3-8 with a 4.56 ERA in 17 starts with St. Louis.

The veteran right-hander is also in the final year of his contract, and rental pitching tends to be in high demand at the trade deadline.

Detroit could bring in a starter that can eat innings when he's right and keep them in ballgames. The Tigers would certainly benefit from having a healthy veteran around if they aren't going to get much out of Cobb, who has dealt with various injuries this season.

Fedde was traded to St. Louis from the Chicago White Sox last season, and he is their most likely trade chip this season.

We'll see if the Tigers show any interest.
