Third baseman Alex Bregman will be testing out free agency for the second offseason in a row. He decided to opt out of the $80 million remaining on the three-year deal he signed with the Boston Red Sox in 2024.

After an impressive season in Boston, Bregman is expected to get a lot of attention this winter. The idea seems to be that the 31-year-old is seeking a better situation than the $40 million-a-year he had with the Red Sox.

The Detroit Tigers were a team that was trying to acquire him last offseason, and senior MLB insider Jeff Passan believes they will continue their pursuit of the three-time All-Star.

How would Alex Bregman fit into the Tigers' lineup?

Passan mentioned the third baseman in an article that updates multiple free agent situations, saying, "Detroit (Tigers) and Chicago (Cubs), which pursued him last winter but came up short, will rejoin the fray, with Philadelphia lurking as it juggles multiple potential paths."

In 2025, the Tigers rotated between Colt Keith, Zach McKinstry, and Javier Baez at third base. Detroit would use the three, depending on the health of the roster and matchups, but bringing in Alex Bregman would solidify an everyday starter at the position.

It will depend on not just the money, but the situation of the team for Bregman to make up his mind on the team he would like to sign with.

If Detroit can come up on top in the competition, it will be adding a consistent bat that has hit 20 home runs in five of the last eight seasons. In 2025, Bregman finished with a.273 batting average,.360 on-base percentage,.462 slugging rate, and a.821 OPS while hitting 18 home runs and 62 RBI in 114 games.
