One of the biggest stories of the offseason comes out of the Detroit Tigers' camp. It involves their two-time AL Cy Young Award-winning pitcher, Tarik Skubal, and his future status with the club.
Skubal is still under contract with Detroit for one more season before he can hit free agency. The club is doing its best to figure out a way to reach an extension, but a possible trade has not been thrown out the window.
Teams have been calling Detroit inquiring about Skubal, but nothing more than that. Detroit has kept things relatively quiet about the situation, and that has continued through the GM Meetings.
Tigers GM Jeff Greenberg stays quiet on Tarik Skubal's future
This week, the MLB General Manager Meetings got underway. This is a chance for all the clubs to come together, discuss what their needs are for the following season, and talk about potential trade scenarios.
During these meetings, Detroit's general manager, Jeff Greenberg, was asked about Skubal's future. Staying the course, Greenberg did not offer much of an update, via Fansided's Robert Murray.
"Tarik is a Tiger. We're not going to talk about the context of trade or extension. It's not fair to the player."
Greenberg did not go into much detail out of respect for his ace pitcher.
However, this will not stop opposing teams from reaching out and trying to acquire Skubal. He is coming off two incredible seasons and can change a team's fortunes around.
For now, fans can expect Detroit to continue to stay quiet on this matter. Expect the Tigers to do all they can to reach an extension with Skubal over the winter. If they cannot come to terms and believe he will leave in free agency, then expect Detroit to start seriously listening to trade offers.
