Tigers' Gleyber Torres revealed he was playing through injury for about a month image

The Detroit Tigers lost to the Seattle Mariners in an instant classic ALDS Game 5 matchup. It lasted into the 15th inning before the Mariners won on a walk-off, and the Tigers were eliminated in one of the more brutal ways possible.

While the Tigers' pitching and defense were elite all night, the offense struggled too much for Detroit to overcome. After the game, when the Tigers players were interviewed about the tough loss, Gleyber Torres revealed some surprising injury news.

Chris McCoskey of The Detroit News shared Torres' answer after the game that, for the last month of the season, he had been dealing with a sports hernia. Torres detailed the injury and revealed that he's going to have surgery in the offseason.

When asked how long he had been dealing with the sports hernia injury, Torres said, "For about a month."

"But, I mean, I'm the player," Torres said. "I'm gonna do everything for the team. No excuses. So I'm gonna say thank you for the trainers, the medical staff. We worked really hard to keep me playing every day."

Torres, dealing with a hernia injury, ended his 2025 regular season and playoff bid with the Tigers, playing 145 games with another eight coming during their incredible, albeit short, playoff run.

Through the All-Star break, Torres was hitting .281 with an .812 OPS in 84 games. After the break, Torres, in 61 regular-season games, hit .223 with a .659 OPS. His numbers took a significant dip, and now that the injury is known, his struggles in the second half make a lot of sense.

During the playoffs, Torres played in all eight games and hit .235 with a .698 OPS. While it was better than his second-half numbers, he still struggled more than he had for most of the regular season. In Game 5 of the ALDS that went into the 15th inning, Torres went 0-6 with one walk and two strikeouts.

"It was not good from the second half. It was a lot of pain." Torres revealed. "But we do a really good job keeping me playing ... it's not about the numbers, it's about playing every day."

Detroit didn't get the first-half productivity from Torres, but he was still a solid player for the Tigers despite his injury. His September numbers, a .209 average and .631 OPS, were a sign of the wear and tear Torres was dealing with.

Torres is set to be a free agent after his one-year deal with Detroit came to an end, and the Tigers' All-Star could decide to return to the team after a productive 2025 season. But, before he signs anywhere, he will undergo surgery for his hernia injury, as he looks to get back to full strength for the 2026 MLB season, wherever he ends up.
