Tigers' Gleyber Torres not expected to get $100 million contract in free agency image

The New York Yankees allowed Gleyber Torres to walk in free agency an offseason ago, a decision that some didn't agree with. Had the Yankees kept Torres, one could argue that they'd be a better team than they currently are.

Torres had a tough year for the Yankees a season ago, but ultimately, he’s a multi-time All-Star and can swing the bat with the best of them at second base.

It'll be interesting to see if his free agency goes the way he wants it to this year, as some believe that he's in a position to get paid more than he did a year ago.

Will Gleyber Torres Leave the Tigers?

Regarding which teams could be interested in him, The Athletic’s Cody Stavenhagen recently wrote that Torres will have a tough time getting a $100 million deal, but there will be contenders interested in him.

“Add it all up, and Torres could be a fascinating case in free agency this winter. The $100 million contract he desires will be a lofty goal. He will only get older, and his range on defense is unlikely to improve. However, his consistency at-bat, plus the leadership he has shown in Detroit, could make him a strong piece for nearly any contending club.

“The Tigers have a host of infield prospects on the way, including the ballyhooed Kevin McGonigle, which could make Torres’ return to Detroit unlikely. At the right price, could Torres even fit on next year’s Tigers team? If not, the club will be searching for another way to replace Torres’ right-handed production,” he noted.

Had Torres played with the Yankees this year and had the season he's currently having in Detroit, there'd be a strong argument for him to return.

Regardless of where he lands, Spotrac recently predicted how much he could be worth. They have him landing a four-year, $54.7 million deal. That type of money for Torres would be more than fair, considering it would come in at less than $14 million AAV.

Even for the Tigers, that’s a deal they need to make, considering their current position.
