Tigers designate starting pitcher dropped from 40-man roster image

The Detroit Tigers acquired Cleveland Guardians relief pitcher Paul Sewald on MLB trade deadline day. In return, the Guardians received a player that is to be named later or cash considerations.

This was a much-needed addition for the Tigers, who have already acquired two other relievers, including Atlanta Braves relief pitcher Rafael Montero and Washington Nationals reliever Kyle Finnegan.

The bullpen is one of the biggest needs for the Tigers at the trade deadline, and it appears Detroit is reaching its goal of strengthening the group of relievers for the final stretch of the season.

To make room for Sewald and the other relievers on their 40-man roster, the Tigers have designated long-time pitcher Matt Manning for assignment.

Manning has been with the Tigers for the last four seasons and has recorded an 11-15 pitching record with a 4.43 ERA and 178 strikeouts in his career with Detroit. Manning has started in five games for the Tigers this season and has collected 23 strikeouts and a 4.88 ERA.

Manning used to be a reliable starter for the Tigers, but in the past few seasons, injuries have held him back. Manning has only played in 20 games the last two seasons with the Tigers, as he has played the majority of his time with Detroit’s Triple-A affiliate, the Toledo Mudhens.

With Manning designated for assignment, it's unclear when he will return to playing with the Tigers, but with Detroit acquiring several pitchers at the deadline, expect him to stay the rest of the season with the Mudhens.
