After a strong regular season, the Detroit Tigers will be in the mix for the finest free agents available this winter.
One of those free agents is third baseman Alex Bregman, who recently opted out of his three-year deal with the Boston Red Sox after suiting up for them in 2025. Bregman hit.273 with 18 home runs, and 62 RBIs in 114 games this season with the Red Sox. He was named an All-Star for the first time since 2019 thanks to his efforts.
The Tigers season ended in the ALDS against the Seattle Mariners. After the disappointing ending, The Athletic’s Jim Bowden has named the Tigers amongst the best fits for Bregman’s services.
“He will be sought-after in free agency as the industry views him as a winning player who can contribute on both sides of the ball and perform on the biggest stage in the biggest moments. He’ll likely seek a long-term contract instead of settling for a shorter-term deal like he did last year,” Bowden said.
At 31-years-old, signing Bregman to a long-term contract could give the Tigers some pause when they consider the possibility, especially considering how Javier Baez’s long-term contract has aged, despite a bounce-back 2025 campaign.
After breaking out into contenders in the American League in 2025, the Tigers are looking to take that next step towards solidified contention. Detroit’s offense could use a jolt, and acquiring someone of Bregman’s caliber could be just what they need to give the lineup more depth and balance going forward.
