On a day when MLB teams all over were changing up their rosters, the Detroit Tigers may have been the most active.
It started when Gleyber Torres accepted his $22.025 million qualifying offer to return to Detroit for 2026.
That took up one 40-man roster spot, and the Tigers chose to protect five more prospects from the Rule 5 Draft.
These are the five guys they added to the 40:
- Hao-Yu Lee
- Thayron Liranzo
- Trei Cruz
- Eduardo Valencia
- Jake Miller
Because of those six total additions to the 40-man roster, the Tigers needing to clear six spots.
They did it by designated six relief pitchers for assignment. They'll go on waivers, from which they could be claimed or eventually clear.

The six guys the Tigers DFA'd were:
- Dugan Darnell
- Jack Little
- Sean Guenther
- Jason Foley
- Tanner Rainey
- Tyler Mattison
This is all very logical for Detroit. It makes way more sense to have the guys on the 40-man roster be promising young players rather than a bunch of relief pitchers.
In the long run, this can only be good for the Tigers.
