The Detroit Tigers blew out the New York Yankees again last night in a 11-1 victory. What seemed to be a close matchup in the beginning saw the Tigers leading 3-0 through seven, ultimately scoring eight runs in the final two innings.
This was eerily similar to Tuesday's game, where Detroit scored 10 runs in the final three innings en route to a big victory.
Jack Flaherty pitched five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out seven. Riley Greene, Kerry Carpenter and Colt Keith all homered and accounted for seven of the team's 11 RBIs.
Adding Tuesday's 12-2 victory into the equation, these two games marked the first time since 1993 that Detroit has won consecutive games by double digits, when they beat the Minnesota Twins 17-1 and 16-5.
As an offense, the Tigers have scored 33 runs over their last four games — an average of 8.25 per contest. The pitching staff has been solid too, surrendering just nine runs in the same span.
Despite holding a 9 1/2-game lead over the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Central, Detroit remains locked in a battle with the Toronto Blue Jays for the AL’s top seed.
With Toronto's loss last night against Houston, Detroit regained the No. 1 seed, but only lead by 1/2 a game. However, Toronto owns the tiebreaker after taking the season series 4-3.
Detroit will look to finish off a sweep of the Yankees in the series finale today before facing the Miami Marlins next.
