The Detroit Tigers might be the team that garners the most attention this winter, with Tarik Skubal the subject of trade rumors and contract talks. But the Tigers could also be major buyers this winter to put together a championship roster in Skubal's final year in Detroit.

Even if Skubal stays beyond 2026, the Tigers should still look to capitalize on their window right now. And one way to do so would be to finally acquire the player who's frequently linked to the Tigers in recent years.

For Andy McCullough of The Athletic, the Tigers' best free agent target this winter is former Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman. He could finally reunite with A.J. Hinch after countless rumors in the last year.

Tigers could finally acquire Alex Bregman after a year of rumors

"If the Tigers aren't going to trade Tarik Skubal, then they should try to win the World Series with him." McCullough writes. "The market for Bregman heading into 2026 should be similar to the market for his services heading into 2025."

Over the 2025 offseason, Bregman was linked to the Tigers before he wound up signing with the Red Sox. When Boston was struggling in the middle of the season, Bregman was subject to trade rumors.

Detroit, unsurprisingly, was one of the many teams named as a suitor for Bregman in a potential trade. Boston rebounded and didn't sell at the deadline. But if they did trade him, then the Tigers would've been one of the top landing spots.

The three-time All-Star third baseman would be a tricky fit in Detroit due to a crowded infield, but the Tigers can shift things around to bring a player like Bregman in.

With his market expected to be similar to his market last offseason, when the Tigers were interested, there's no reason why Bregman wouldn't be linked to the Tigers this offseason.

Bregman would be a great addition to the lineup in Detroit, while also providing quality defense at third base. He might not be the flashiest addition, but a solid.273 average and.821 OPS would be exactly what the Tigers need to add this offseason.
