Reports have indicated that the Detroit Tigers are interested in Boston Red Sox free agent Alex Bregman. Bregman has a history with Tigers head coach A.J. Hinch, as both were members of the Houston Astros organization just a few years ago.
Hinch was the manager, and Bregman was one of his stars.
At the end of the day, while signing someone like Bregman would be a significant step in the right direction for the Tigers, it’s also important to remember that unless they’re willing to give him the type of money he and his agent Scott Boras are looking for, they shouldn’t believe they’re in a great spot to land a player of his caliber.
According to the latest from Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, however, the Tigers are at least in the mix, and he believes Bregman’s situation will start to heat up in the next few days.
“Those signings were just the appetizers for the rest of the position-player menu, because the biggest names remain available.
“Kyle Tucker, Cody Bellinger, Alex Bregman and Bo Bichette should see their markets begin to heat up, especially with few players on the trade market of their caliber... The markets for both Bregman and Bichette aren’t as defined. The Cubs, Tigers and Red Sox are believed to be among the teams pursuing Bregman, while the Blue Jays, Braves and Red Sox have been connected to Bichette,” he wrote.
This will likely come down to how much Bregman is looking for.
If he’s willing to take a few-year deal worth around $150 million, the Tigers will probably be involved. If he’s looking for $200-plus million, it’s tough to see an avenue where the Tigers truly have a competitive offer.
