Cowboys predicted to swing trade for Steelers pass catcher, former draft target image

The Dallas Cowboys have already acquired one pass catcher from the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason. Could they swing a trade for another as well?

The Pittsburgh Steelers traded for Jonnu Smith earlier this offseason, and it could mean they are willing to part ways with Darnell Washington. Between Smith and Pat Freiermuth, the Steelers may not be able to find a role for Washington on their team. FanSided's Cody Williams predicted the Cowboys would trade for Washington.

"Both Jake Ferguson and Luke Schoonmaker have been fine in the Dallas Cowboys receiving game, but they've left a ton to be desired as a blocker," wrote Williams. "With a young offensive line in Brian Schottenheimer's offense, taking a flier with a team that Dallas has already traded with this offseason on Washington to come in and help add extra protection on the edge would make a great deal of sense, especially if the aim is to also improve the ground game."

The Cowboys had Washington come in for a top-30 visit while he was a draft prospect. There were some injury concerns for him coming out of college, but he has been healthy in his young NFL career.

Washington had 200 yards last season, playing in the shadow of Freiermuth. He has primarily been used as a blocker during his time with the Steelers. He has upside as a pass catcher, and perhaps could have a bigger role in the passing attack for the Cowboys.

The Steelers simply do not need Washington anymore. Smith is under contract through the 2026 season, and Freiermuth does not look like he is going anywhere anytime soon.
