Browns replace Joe Flacco immediately with new signing image

The Cleveland Browns traded away Joe Flacco to the Cincinnati Bengals, opening up a roster spot on the 53-man roster.

With Dillon Gabriel and Sheduer Sanders as the two quarterbacks on the active roster, and Bailey Zappe as the emergency third quarterback, the Browns elected to fill Flacco's roster spot with a non-quarterback.

As the Browns announced on ClevelandBrowns.com, they have signed cornerback Dom Jones to the active roster, and made two other roster moves to fill Flacco's roster spot and round out their practice squad.

The Browns sign cornerback Dom Jones to the 53-man roster

Jones is a rookie cornerback out of Colorado State and was signed as an undrafted free agent coming out of the 2025 NFL Draft. As the Browns revealed, Jones will wear no. 37 for Cleveland.

As part of this roster move, the Browns have also signed cornerback Dee Williams to the practice squad and placed cornerback Ameer Speed on the practice squad/injured list.

Williams, like Jones, was an undrafted free agent, though he comes from the 2024 draft class. He signed with the Seattle Seahawks initially, and is now on the Browns practice squad after appearing in 12 games with Seattle and one game with the New York Giants.

Jones is 25 years old and has appeared in three games for the Browns this season. He hasn't played much, with only 10 snaps on defense and 15 snaps on special teams, but with his addition to the active roster, he'll likely get a chance for more work.

Jones might see more playing time as the year progresses, especially now that he's made the 53-man roster. For now, he's made the active roster, taking over Flacco's roster spot in the wake of Cleveland's trade with the Bengals.

The Browns face the Pittsburgh Steelers in week 6, as they come back to the United States, but stay on the road for their first matchup against the Steelers this season. At 1-4, the Browns will look to get back on track in Gabriel's second career start against an Aaron Rodgers-led Steelers team sitting atop the AFC North after five weeks at 3-1.
