Reds land $3 million international prospect in new deal image

The Cincinnati Reds got a big upgrade to their minor league system on Thursday.

It's the opening day of MLB's international signing period, and the Reds have landed one of the top-10 players available.

Angel Nunez Jr., a 16-year old outfielder from the Dominican Republic, has signed with the Reds for $3 million, according to MLB.com.

Nunez is ranked as the No. 6 prospect in this international class by MLB.com.

He's a 5-foot-10 outfielder who swings and throws left.

"There’s little doubt that Nunez will stick in center field as he transitions to the pro game on the basis of top-tier actions with the glove," MLB.com writes. "He uses his above-average run tool to track down nearly everything from gap-to-gap, while also displaying a plus arm that discourages the opposition from trying to grab extra bases. Nunez swiped nine bags (on 10 attempts) during his World Cup appearance and has been clocked as fast as 6.5 seconds on 60-yard dash times, displaying an ability to impact the game in all facets as he continues to hone his craft."

Nunez hit.350 with 11 RBI in eight games as part of the 2024 U15 Baseball World Cup.

"While his power is still developing, he has an advanced eye at the plate among his age group, as evidenced by his 6:3 BB/K ratio in that same tournament," MLB.com writes. "Starting from a slightly open and upright stance, Nunez allows his quick hands to propel the bat through the zone, oftentimes peppering line drives to the entirety of the field."

The Reds' top international signing at the moment is Elly De La Cruz, who was unheralded at the time, getting just a $65,000 bonus. He worked out great, and Cincy will hope Nunez does, too.
