On Wednesday, the Chicago Cubs beat the Pittsburgh Pirates by a score of 8-4, clinching their spot in the postseason. This marks their first postseason berth since the 2020 season, when they lost in the Wild Card round.

They will be looking to make their mark, especially with the talent they could lose when this season comes to an end. The biggest player on this list is Kyle Tucker, who will be one of the biggest free agents this winter.

However, that is not the only thing that will be on the front office's minds as we get closer to the offseason. They also need to pick up some pitchers, an area that has caused the team some trouble this season.

There will be some intriguing pitching options on the open market this winter. Framber Valdez, Michael King, and Dylan Cease will all be looking for a new contract, but they may be out of Chicago's price range.

Instead, they should look at one pitcher they know quite well, Cincinnati Reds pitcher Nick Martinez. Sports Illustrated's Zach Pressnell argues he would be a great addition for the Cubs in free agency.

"Martinez works as a starter and a reliever for the Reds. He does a solid job in both roles, and the Cubs could look to sign him to a one-or two-year deal with that kind of workload in mind. Chicago could have used more pitching all year, so having a flexible arm like Martinez would have worked to its benefit. With the veteran on the market, the fit makes sense this winter."

Not only can Martinez work as a starter, but he can also come out of the bullpen and still be efficient. That kind of versatility is something the Cubs could use to their advantage next year. If they can sign him on a smaller deal, this would be a great addition for Chicago.
