The Chicago Cubs have signed a well-traveled bullpen veteran.
The right-handed pitcher Phil Maton has signed a two-year deal with the Cubs, according to The Athletic's Will Sammon.
Maton has already pitched for seven different MLB teams: Houston, San Diego, Cleveland, St. Louis, Tampa Bay, Texas and the Mets.
He has a career 3.98 ERA to go with 10.3 strikeouts per nine innings.
Maton split this past season between the St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers.
With the Cardinals, Maton threw 40 games and had a 2.35 ERA.
Then with the Rangers, Maton went 23 games with a 3.52 ERA.
He will turn 33 on March 25.
Maton is a 6-foot-2, 206-pound righty originally from Paducah, Kentucky, before going to high school in Chatham, Illinois. He then attended Louisiana Tech University.
He's pitched in big games, although he's never quite been around a team at the right time to win a World Series.
The Cubs will plan on relying on Maton early and often, and they should be one of the best teams he has pitched on, elevating his chances of throwing in key moments.
