The Chicago Cubs are one of the top teams in Major League Baseball and will look to add to their roster ahead of the trade deadline on July 31.
One area of need for the Cubs is to add to the rotation. Ahead of the deadline, MLB insider Matthew Trueblood of Northsidebaseball reported that the Cubs and Kansas City Royals have discussed a trade for Seth Lugo.
“The Chicago Cubs and the Kansas City Royals had discussions this week about a trade that could send right-handed starter Seth Lugo to the North Siders, sources familiar with the negotiations said…,” Trueblood wrote.

“For now, Lugo and the Cubs are a sensible fit, and talks remain active—but Hoyer is not close to checking off even the first item on his to-do list.”
Lugo is in the second year of his three-year, $45 million deal, but the third year of the deal is a player option. With the Royals outside of the playoffs, Kansas City could be sellers, and Lugo is a trade candidate as he’s a solid third or fourth starter to bolster a team’s rotation for a playoff push.
Lugo is 5-5 with a 2.74 ERA in 15 starts this season. In his career, he’s 61-45 with a 3.32 ERA in 349 games, including 112 starts. The 35-year-old was an All-Star in 2024 and won a Gold Glove Award last season as well.
