Trade idea has Red Sox adding $56M pitcher to bolster rotation image

The Boston Red Sox made the first blockbuster of the Major League Baseball season by dealing Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants.

Although Boston traded their star hitter, the Red Sox are still competing for a playoff spot and will be buyers ahead of the trade deadline. MLB analyst Patrick McAvoy of SI.com projects the Red Sox to acquire Sandy Alcantara from the Miami Marlins to bolster their rotation.

Red Sox acquire:

  • Sandy Alcantara

Marlins acquire:

  • Wilyer Abreu
  • Payton Tolle

“Alcantara is the top name on the trade block and has started to turn things around recently. But, his 6.69 ERA should make the return not be insane,” McAvoy wrote. “In this scenario, the Red Sox would get an ace-level pitcher for the rest of the 2025 season as well as the 2026 season and have a club option for 2027 at affordable prices. Miami would get an outfielder to build around and an intriguing lefty prospect. It might not be enough, but a deal like this would solve the logjam problem while adding pitching.”

Alcantara’s name has come up in trade rumors, despite his struggles this season. He’s a former NL Cy Young Award winner and would bolster the Red Sox rotation. The hope for Boston is that he will get back into form and be a playoff starter. He's in the midst of his five-year, $56 million deal.

In return, Boston would trade Abreu, whose name has come up in trade talks. The outfielder is hitting .253 with 13 home runs and 36 RBIs.

The Red Sox would also trade Tolle, who’s the 15th-ranked prospect in the system. The left-handed pitcher is 1-3 with a 3.62 ERA in 11 games, including 10 starts.
