MLB insider Jon Heyman has reported that the St. Louis Cardinals have traded right-hander Sonny Gray to the Boston Red Sox.

Bob Nightengale quickly confirmed the report that Gray has been informed he is being traded to Boston.

Gray, who just turned 36 years old, was 14-8 last season with the Cardinals and held a 4.28 earned run average. Gray made 32 starts, striking out 201 batters in 180.2 innings pitched.

The right-hander was drafted in the 27th round by the Chicago Cubs in 2008. He then went to Vanderbilt and was drafted in the 2011 draft in the first round (18th overall) by the Oakland Athletics.

In 2017, Gray was traded from Oakland to the New York Yankees. After a season and a half there, he went to Cincinnati and then spent two seasons with the Minnesota Twins. He joined St. Louis in 2024 and won 27 total games, but never reached the postseason with the Cardinals.

In his career, Gray is 125-102 with a 3.58 earned run average. Gray has 1925 strikeouts in 1918 innings pitched.

St. Louis is likely looking to rebuild after a few disappointing seasons. Chaim Bloom took over as the new President of Baseball Operations following John Mozeliak's retirement. St. Louis went 78-84 last season.

Jeff Passan later reported the final pieces of the trade puzzle.

Richard Fitts is a 25-year-old right-hander who has made 14 starts in MLB and is 2-5 in his career. He was 2-4 with a 5.00 last season.

Brandon Clarke was a fifth-round pick in the 2024 MLB draft. The 6-foot-5 lefthander has been considered a high-upside prospect that can reach 100mph.
