This past offseason, the Boston Red Sox signed third baseman Alex Bregman to a three-year deal worth $120 million. However, Bregman has the option in his contract that could allow him to opt-out of his contract after the 2025 MLB season ends.
The 31-year-old third baseman has been having a good year with the Red Sox. In 94 games played, Bregman has a .285 batting average with 16 home runs and 54 RBIs, along with one stolen base and one caught stolen base. His on-base percentage is .368. Once the 2025 season ends, will Bregman opt-out of his current contract with the Red Sox or will he stick around for another two seasons?
MLB Writer Predicts That Boston Red Sox Third Baseman Alex Bregman Will Opt-Out of His Contract After 2025 Season
Tim Kelly of bleacherreport.com made a prediction about each team's potential top free agent at the end of the 2025 MLB season. The only way for Bregman to reach free agency after the year is for him to opt-out of his current contract. Kelly believes that he is going to opt-out of his current deal and said,
"It's been an excellent first season in Boston for Bregman, who has posted an .868 OPS and played strong defense at third base.
He's a lock to opt out of the final two years of his $120 million deal, and he will make out better in free agency this time because he is coming off of a better season and won't have a qualifying offer attached to him.
But for as much as it feels like the Red Sox almost have too much position talent, they moved on from Rafael Devers and manager Alex Cora has a long-standing relationship with Bregman dating back to their time in Houston.
There will be other suitors, but the Red Sox should be seen as the favorites for Bregman."
Kelly also believes that Bregman will also stay with the Red Sox even with him potentially opting out of his contract after the 2025 MLB season. However, if Boston were to lose Bregman in free agency, they would then have to figure out who will be the starting third baseman in 2026. They already traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. Hopefully for the Red Sox, they don't have to worry about Bregman potentially opting out.
