The Boston Red Sox will be faced with a tough test in the AL Wild Card as they face their division rival, the New York Yankees.
Their postseason matchup will be one of the most anticipated series, with Garrett Crochet facing off against Max Fried in Game 1.
However, it's been revealed that the Red Sox will be without one of their top-paid bullpen pitchers for the foreseeable future.
Liam Hendriks undergoes elbow surgery; status for the future remains unknown
Since signing right-handed closer Liam Hendriks to a two-year, $10 million deal in February of 2024, he hasn't seen very much time on the mound with the Red Sox.
He missed all of the 2024 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery and a lingering forearm issue. He began the 2025 season with the Red Sox, but after sustaining a hip problem after just 14 appearances, he suffered another forearm injury that kept him out for the remainder of the 2025 season.
Gabrielle Star of the Boston Herald announced that the 36-year-old underwent right elbow ulnar nerve transposition with posterior interosseous nerve release surgery, putting his start for next season in jeopardy.
It will be interesting to see if the Red Sox pick up the three-time All-Star's mutual option for the 2026 season, as his injury history will definitely play a factor in the decision.
