The Boston Red Sox had a lot of their offseason plans changed on Saturday night, when Alex Bregman signed a huge $175 million deal with the Chicago Cubs.

In the wake of that signing, the Red Sox now need to pivot to a different infield option. Toronto Blue Jays free-agent Bo Bichette is a clear option to replace Bregman's role on the team.

Bichette isn't the only option for Boston this winter, as the trade market is an area to explore, especially with the St. Louis Cardinals. But, Keith Law of The Athletic is urging Boston to go after Bichette over any other addition this offseason.

"I suppose they could always make a third trade with St. Louis and go get Brendan Donovan, but I'd spend the extra money on Bichette rather than trade more prospect depth for Donovan."

The Red Sox have already made two trades with the Cardinals, acquiring Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras from the NL Central club.

Brendan Donovan, a second baseman who's under club control for the next two seasons and one of the best available second basemen this offseason, would make a lot of sense for the Red Sox.

But, for Law, after they've already traded from their prospect depth this winter for those two Cardinals stars, along with Johan Oviedo from the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Red Sox should look to free agency instead.

And if they do, Bichette is by far their best option. He's 28 years old and would be a great addition to the lineup. He could slide into second or third base, with Marcelo Mayer taking the other spot in the infield.

Thanks to the Red Sox already making multiple trades this winter, Law is urging Boston to go after a free agent addition instead.

Law's point is a good one, and should be followed by the Red Sox this winter. Whether it's Bichette or another free agent like Eugenio Suarez, the Red Sox should sign a free agent instead of trying to trade for a new infielder.
