Red Sox trade rumor sends Jarren Duran to NL for Alex Bregman's replacement image

The Boston Red Sox have a lot of moving parts this offseason.

Alex Bregman is a free agent, and they might want to re-sign him to play third base. And then there are the trade rumors featuring Jarren Duran and Wilyer Abreu.

What if the Red Sox could check two boxes at once?

ESPN's Eric Karabell has brought this possibility to the table. He suggests the Red Sox trade Duran to the Philadelphia Phillies for Alec Bohm.

That clears the outfield logjam while also landing a replacement for Bregman.

"These lightning-rod players certainly are not coming off their best seasons and perhaps each needs the proverbial change of scenery," Karabell writes. "The Red Sox may need someone to play third base, and Bohm, while no match for Alex Bregman, is a capable hitter and defender. The Phillies could then get a more consistent third baseman who enjoys playing in Philadelphia. Duran would fill Philadelphia's center-field need, and it would create some opportunity in a crowded Boston outfield. See, trades can work out for both teams!"

This would also likely be positive news for Detroit Tigers fans, since they seem to be the team most likely to land Bregman if he doesn't come back to Boston.

This would probably come down to two things: What the Red Sox think of Bohm, and whether they think they can re-sign Bregman.

If Boston feels Bregman is a goner, then it makes sense to pursue a deal for a different third baseman.

And then they have to decide if Bohm is worth Duran.

If both boxes line up, then this deal could happen. The Phillies could certainly benefit from landing Duran, a talented, extra-base machine.
