Red Sox trade pitch lands $34 million first baseman from NL Central image

The Boston Red Sox are in fourth place in the American League East entering play on Thursday. However, they are just three games back of a wild card spot.

While they have traded away Rafael Devers and are relying heavily on young players, they still have hope to make the postseason. They should be getting Alex Bregman back soon, and could make a few additions at the trade deadline to better their postseason chances. The Boston Herald's Mac Cerullo suggested they trade for Rhys Hoskins of the Milwaukee Brewers.

"Hoskins is on pace to top 25 home runs for the sixth time in his career, and his strikeout and walk rates have both improved after falling to career-worsts last year following a lost 2023 due to injury," wrote Cerullo. "He also bats right-handed, which would give the Red Sox another established option from that side to pair with Trevor Story and eventually Alex Bregman."

Getting Bregman back could be a huge boost for the Red Sox offense. However, it will not solve their woes at first base. Ever since Triston Casas suffered a season-ending injury, the Red Sox have been looking for a consistent option there. Hoskins is slahling .242/.340/.424 through 80 games. His average and OPS are both closer to his career average after a down year last season.

He signed a two-year, $34 million deal last offseason. He has an $18 million mutual option for next season as well. The Brewers look like a team that can win their division and make the postseason at the very least. They may not be inclined to trade Hoskins. However, they always have one eye on the future, and recently acquired Andrew Vaughn has been playing well in Triple-A.

The Red Sox could see if the Brewers are willing to part ways with him. They may not have much interest in picking up his option after this year anyway.
