For the Boston Red Sox fans hoping to one day see the player nicknamed "The Password" in the everyday lineup at Fenway Park, there is disappointment.

The Red Sox traded Jhostynxon Garcia away late Thursday as part of a package to acquire talented pitcher Johan Oviedo from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The full deal looked like this:

  • Red Sox get:  RHP Johan Oviedo, LHP Tyler Samaniego, C Adonys Guzman
  • Pirates get:  OF Jhostynxon Garcia, RHP Jesus Travieso

Garcia is ranked as the No. 85 prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline. He's got a great swing, great hair and a great nickname, and he should be a stalwart in the Pirates' outfield for years to come.

The Red Sox did this deal to get the 6-foot-6, 275-pound Oviedo.

He made nine starts in 2025 after returning from Tommy John surgery and had a 3.57 ERA. He struck out 42 batters in 40.1 innings pitched.

Oviedo's fastball averages just a tick under 96 miles per hour, and MLB.com writes that his extension of 7.4 feet last season ranked in the 98th percentile in MLB.

He's the second pitcher acquisition by Boston this offseason after getting Sonny Gray from the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Red Sox also receive Guzman, a low-level minor league catcher, and Samaniego, who has a 3.82 ERA in the minor leagues as a relief pitcher.

Pittsburgh also gets Travieso, who had a 3.51 ERA as an 18-year-old in Low-A in 2025.

This deal will likely be judged on how Oviedo and Garcia turn out.
