The Red Sox are about to take on the New York Yankees in a huge Wild Card matchup, but that also means roster decisions are looming, and the Red Sox front office will have its hands full come the offseason.

Boston pretty much has its postseason roster set, but it's the moves they make after the season that may come as a surprise to some fans.

Red Sox expected to move on from reliever Liam Hendriks

Liam Hendriks has one of the best stories in baseball, with his recovery from cancer a few seasons ago and his eventual comeback into Major League Baseball.

He signed a two-year, $10 million deal with the Red Sox, but his 2025 season officially came to an end Monday. He hadn't pitched since May, and now it's been reported that the Red Sox are likely going to decline his $12 million player option.

As much as he's a fan favorite among the MLB community, it just wouldn't make any sense for the Red Sox to keep Hendriks anymore due to the injuries, plus his aging. Boston will likely pay him the remaining money on his contract and then send him on his way.

Hendriks pitched 13.2 innings for the Red Sox this season, posting a 6.59 ERA and 12 strikeouts. It was his only MLB game action since 2023, where he only threw five innings for the Chicago White Sox. The baseball community wishes the best for Hendriks and the rest of his career, but nobody would be surprised if a retirement announcement is looming.
