The Boston Red Sox have put themselves in a position to be buyers at the trade deadline, despite a rough stretch earlier in the year. Could they target relievers to add to their already strong bullpen?

The Red Sox have a 3.44 bullpen ERA this season. Their group has been one of the best in baseball this season, but there is no such thing as too many good relievers. NBC Sports' Justin Legar suggested they could try and trade for Kyle Finnegan of the Washington Nationals.

"Finnegan represented the Nationals at the 2024 All-Star Game and has been even better so far in 2025," wrote Legar. "The 33-year-old has a 3.12 ERA and 1.18 WHIP over 35 outings. While he may not move the needle like a (Jhoan) Duran, (Griffin) Jax or (David) Bednar, Finnegan is a rock-solid reliever who should be relatively affordable as a rental."

The Red Sox do not need a closer. They have an All-Star in Aroldis Chapman. However, Finnegan could serve as an elite setup man, or high high-leverage option for Alex Cora.

Finnegan has a 3.52 career ERA and would be a great addition to any contender. The Nationals are set up to be sellers at the deadline, and the Red Sox could be the beneficiary.

The Red Sox have a bigger need in the starting rotation than in the bullpen. However, strengthening the bullpen can never hurt a team looking to make a deep run.
