The 2025 season did not quite go the way the Boston Red Sox had hoped it would.

A postseason appearance did happen, but Boston was eliminated at the hands of its bitter rival, the New York Yankees. A player that sparked a bit of the Red Sox second half surge has reportedly been designated for assignment.

According to a post on X from the official team account, first baseman/designated hitter Nathaniel Lowe has been designated for assignment. The move comes after Boston acquired infielder Tristan Gray from the Tampa Bay Rays.

Boston acquired Lowe in the later part of the season after he was released by the Washington Nationals. He appeared in 34 games with the Red Sox, slashing.280/.370/.420 with two home runs, six doubles, 16 RBI and a.790 OPS. He logged just seven postseason at-bats, collecting just one hit.

Lowe was not expected to stick around long-term, as Boston is expecting the return of the injured Triston Casas. The DFA now signals that the Red Sox are expecting Casas to return to form and will likely not be keeping Lowe around to be the backup.

Boston will still have five days to work out a trade for Lowe. If that is not reached, he will be eligible to sign with any new team for the 2026 season.
