The Boston Red Sox should be adding another infielder this winter after trading for Willson Contreras, with the most obvious move being a potential reunion with Alex Bregman.
Ryan Finkelstein of Just Baseball predicted that Bregman would sign a five-year, $155 million deal with Boston, a deal that makes sense for both sides at the moment.
Bregman is coming off a strong season in Boston, one that reestablished his value, despite an injury that bothered him a bit. Bregman is clearly looking for long-term security, ideally on a contract that could be one of his final in Major League Baseball.
The right-handed hitting third baseman didn’t have the offseason he was hoping for last winter, but with more on his side this time around, it feels like he’ll get the deal he wants.
“Now, after one strong season in Boston, Bregman looks to hit the market again, likely trying to sign a long-term deal that takes him through his 30s.
“Set to turn 32 years old around Opening Day, Bregman may want an eight-year deal that takes him through his age-39 season. Considering the fact that the Tigers went the longest in contract length last year at six years, it is unlikely for Bregman to secure a deal beyond that when he is a year older and coming off a season dampened by injury,” he wrote.
A five-year, $155 million deal would be a good deal for both sides. It gives Bregman a big AAV of $31 million per year, but it doesn’t put Boston in long-term risk, and it keeps a proven veteran in the middle of its lineup.
Bregman was loved by his teammates last year and seems like someone who wants to be in Boston. For those reasons and more, there isn’t much of a reason not to re-sign him.
