Red Sox linked to frustrating Alex Bregman replacements after Cubs deal image

The Boston Red Sox were dealt heartbreak on Saturday night as they lost free-agent third baseman to the Chicago Cubs on a $175 million, five-year deal.

It's a tough blow for the Red Sox, as they now don't have the best alternatives. Bo Bichette makes the most sense, but the Philadelphia Phillies are serious suitors, and Boston might not be as strong a player as they were with Bregman.

Rob Bradford of WEEI pitched one possible plan the Red Sox could execute in the wake of losing Bregman. Unfortunately for fans, it would be a frustrating one.

Red Sox could avoid elite bats after losing Bregman to Cubs

"One pivot to keep an eye on with the Red Sox is re-engaging with higher-end pitching while also acquiring a lower-tier bat than Bregman/Bichette," Bradford writes. "In other words, double down on run prevention."

The Red Sox have built up a strong rotation this winter, but they could, in theory, add another frontline starter to the rotation.

Ranger Suarez, Framber Valdez, and Zac Gallen are all still free agents and could be realistic options for the Red Sox if they want to spend big, but avoid doing so on a top position player.

Bradford's idea would have the Red Sox land a top pitcher left on the market and explore the cheaper option in the infield. One name stands out as a very interesting option this winter.

Eugenio Suarez, a slugger who is coming off a strong 2025 season, could be a realistic target for the Red Sox if they pair him with another starting pitcher.

Adding both Ranger and Eugenio Suarez could make for an interesting replacement for Bregman, thanks to the massive difference in contract demands.

While not going after Bo Bichette or another top free agent hitter would be a disappointing move from the Red Sox, it might not be all bad if they can land an elite starter along with a solid slugger like Suarez.
