The Boston Red Sox still need a third baseman for the season ahead.

The most logical guy remaining in free agency is still Alex Bregman, who spent the 2025 season with Boston and was regarded as a solid leader for the Red Sox.

But Bregman is sought after by other teams as the new year begins, too, namely the Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs.

The Red Sox could need a backup plan.

MLB.com's Jared Greenspan laid one out in a new article on Thursday: Eugenio Suarez.

"Re-signing third baseman Alex Bregman would be an obvious move," he writes. "If Bregman signs elsewhere, slugger Eugenio Suárez could be a fallback option."

Suarez hit 49 home run in the 2025 MLB season.

He began the year with the Arizona Diamondbacks and was a monster, blasting 36 homers, including a four-HR game.

He was traded to the Seattle Mariners just before the trade deadline, and his hitting stats all declined, although he did still hit 13 home runs in his time in the Pacific Northwest.

Suarez's market hasn't seemed particularly robust this offseason, with him linked to a number of teams that most wouldn't regard as playoff contenders.

If the Mariners don't bring Suarez back, which is still up in the air, then he could fit nicely in Boston.

He'd certainly have a lot of fun trying to blast baseballs over the Green Monster.
