Red Sox get latest update on Eugenio Suarez free agent pursuit image

The Boston Red Sox entered the offseason hoping that Alex Bregman would come back and remain their third baseman.

That, though, isn't happening. Bregman signed with the Chicago Cubs in free agency for five years and $175 million.

That leaves Boston deciding whether Marcelo Mayer is a good enough option to begin the season at third, with Romy Gonzalez at second, or if there are still moves to be made.

One free agent still available that could take the third base job is Eugenio Suarez.

The slugging Suarez hit 49 home runs in 2025. The first 36 of those came in a blistering start to the campaign with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He then hit 13 more after being moved at the trade deadline to the Seattle Mariners.

Suarez is a streaky hitter, but he maintains prodigious power. He had a four-homer game in 2025.

But if the Red Sox are going to get Suarez, there will be work to do.

MassLive's Chris Cotillo reported this on Tuesday:

"Another Red Sox update: As of the weekend, very little traction when it came to Eugenio Suarez."

The Red Sox don't necessarily need Suarez. He may be asking for too much money, because it seems like otherwise he may have signed somewhere already.

Boston could also land a second baseman and let Mayer and Gonzalez duke it out for the third base job.

The Red Sox probably aren't done, but there's nothing that sounds like it's immediately looming, either.
