Red Sox might have to go through Blue Jays, Orioles to get Pete Alonso to AL East in free agency image

Pete Alonso has done all his major league mashing in the NL East.

The free agent from the New York Mets may very well have the opportunity this offseason to take his talents to the AL East instead.

ESPN listed seven possible landing spots for Alonso in an article on Friday by Jorge Castillo, including a return to the Mets. Three of the other six teams listed were AL East ballclubs.

The Boston Red Sox were one of them. They've been a common link to Alonso early in free agency.

But the last also included the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays (along with the Phillies, Reds and Pirates).

Boston could have a divisional battle on its hands to secure a slugging free agent.

"The Red Sox president of baseball operations, Craig Breslow, has made it clear: He wants to acquire an accomplished middle-of-the-order bat, preferably a right-handed one," ESPN's Jorge Castillo writes. "Trading Devers, combined with Alex Bregman's free agency, has left the Red Sox without much proven slug in their lineup. A reunion with Bregman would check that box. As would signing Alonso, who could split time at first base and DH with Casas if Boston were to keep him."

The Red Sox may have to decide if they want both Alonso and Bregman, or if one is a priority over the other.

Boston would certainly rather land Alonso than have him go be the Blue Jays' DH and join a potent combo with Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

The Orioles also have tons of talent, so don't let a disappointing 2025 fool you: They'd be dangerous with Alonso, too.

A bidding war among divisional foes could certainly get Alonso to end up with a nice payday.
