Braves' Sean Murphy surprisingly named trade candidate due to Drake Baldwin image

If the Atlanta Braves want to have the offseason they're looking to have, it might require them to move on from some talented players on their big league roster.

One of those guys could be catcher Sean Murphy due to the emergence of Drake Baldwin, as Murphy had one of his worst seasons as a professional in 2025.

Frankly, with how poorly he played in 2024, and still dealing with some injuries throughout the past two years, hitting below.200 in each season, he seems like an obvious trade candidate.

According to Matt Snyder of CBS Sports, he wouldn't be surprised if Murphy gets traded this offseason, citing the fact that Baldwin is clearly the option at the catcher position in Atlanta moving forward.

“Given the breakout of Rookie of the Year catcher Drake Baldwin, there might be a chance to trade catcher Sean Murphy, too. As things stand, the Braves have an open DH spot for one from the Baldwin/Murphy combo, but if they add a bat for DH, they might decide that Baldwin needs to play most days and Murphy is being wasted as a backup. As such, moving him in a package to help the pitching staff makes sense,” he wrote.

As he also touched on, Murphy could be a designated hitter, but he'd have to be much better and return to his 2023 and earlier form to be the player the Braves are looking for.

He also might not get a ton in return regarding a trade, so Atlanta would likely have to add some of its prospects in a deal for a decent player.
