The Athletics are coming off a season where their foundation is finally starting to take place. They got above-average play from many of their youngsters, most importantly Jacob Wilson, Shea Langeliers, Nick Kurtz, and Brent Rooker.
All four were a huge part of their offense, and that should continue next season. This could be a core that the front office wants to keep around for a while.
Do not be surprised if they all come out in 2026 and do much of the same thing. This club is setting itself up great for its move the Las Vegas in 2028.
Athletics looking to lock down some of their younger talent
Teams have increasingly been looking to lock down some of their younger talent to extensions earlier in their career rather than later. This helps the team save money up front, but it could come back to cost the team.
There is no guarantee that the player getting the extension will continue to play up to expectations. However, if they play past expectations, the savings could be drastic.
According to The Athletic's Melissa Lockard, the club has held extension talks with some of its younger players. She talked about the potential here with the crew over at Foul Territory.
"I know they have been in talks with some of their younger players about extensions."
While she made no mention of the specifics, she did mention that Nick Kurtz, Jacob Wilson, Tyler Soderstrom, and Shea Langeliers could be in play for future extensions.
Kurtz is coming off an AL Rookie of the Year season, and extending him for a few more years while he is still cheap would not hurt the fanbase's feelings.
That might be the club's best play during this year's offseason. While they need to fill some holes, making sure the future is in order before they move will be key.
