World No.3 Xander Schauffele enters as the defending champion and one of the favourites in the 156-player field. However, the loudest cheers will be reserved for Northern Ireland's most-celebrated athlete, Rory McIlroy. It has been a memorable season for McIlroy as he won The Masters in April to complete his career Grand Slam.

Which players are competing at the Open Championship golf?

Local favorite and World No. 2 Rory McIlroy is competing in his 16th Open Championship. Having completed a career grand slam by winning the Masters this year, the 36-year-old will look to win the Open Championship for a second time having won it in 2014.

Bryson DeChambeau has been in good form in the Majors this season with five top-six finishes.

Justin Thomas has had a promising campaign so far, having risen from World No. 22 to World No. 4 with his impressive outings at the PGA Tour, including a victory at the RBC Heritage. He could be the dark horse in the tournament.
