Updated Fantasy Auction Values 2022 Cheat Sheet: Dollar projections, overall rankings for standard & PPR leagues

If you’re into fantasy football – like, annoyingly into fantasy football (you know who you are) – it’s likely you know at least one “auction snob.” In fact, if you’re reading this, you might be an auction snob. While “basic” snake-draft owners are pouring over rankings and talking about how they hope to get one of Jonathan Taylor or Cooper Kupp in the first round and one or two of their favorite mid-tier sleepers later, the auction snob is scoffing and thinking, “I can get them all if I really want.” If that’s you, then you know all the strategizing and budget planning starts with a handy set of overall dollar value projections for your 2022 cheat sheet.

Of course, you also know that once the nominations and bids start flying, the projected values below are far from gospel. Auctions are a tricky thing to master, as the final prices of similar players can be wildly different. It’s all about when a player gets nominated, how many similar players are still on the board, how much money each individual owner has left, and what position each owner needs.

That’s why we’re careful to refer to these as “projections.” Michael Pittman Jr. could just as easily go for $24 as he could $15 simply based on whether he’s nominated early or late. If two owners are dead set on getting Javonte Williams, he might go for $40. In other leagues where somehow every owner is lukewarm on him because of the continued presence of Melvin Gordon, Williams might go for $25.

Trendy sleepers tend to get bid up, and “boring veterans” will usually go for less than projected. There’s where you usually find values, but, again, it depends on when a player is nominated. If Amari Cooper isn’t nominated until late, all it takes is one owner who still needs a real WR3 (and has some money left in the bank) to overpay for him. If Cooper had been nominated in the first third of the auction, he might go for $10 while owners hold their money for, say, Mike Evans.

Basically, as long as you avoid the early bidding wars on good-but-not-great players when everyone is flush with cash and looking to establish dominance, you should be able to navigate your auction successfully. Make sure you’re paying attention to everyone's budgets/rosters and how many players are left in each tier at every position.

2022 FANTASY SLEEPERS:
QBs | RBs | WRs | TEs | D/STs | One from each team

The latter point is key. The last RB in the second tier (Christian McCaffrey, Dalvin Cook, Joe Mixon, Najee Harris, Nick Chubb, Alvin Kamara) will inevitably get bid up. If you want one of them, it’s usually better to target the second-to-last one available. Obviously, if you want someone specific, then by all means go for it, but being disciplined and looking ahead will help you avoid begrudgingly bidding $7 for the endless parade of $1 fliers that inevitably go at the end of every auction. The worst is when you only have your kicker and D/ST spots left to fill but you still have $15 left in your budget. Those are the saddest "bidding wars."

The “auction snobs” know this, which is why they realize the projected values below are merely a guide. If you figure out how much money you want to allocate to each position and then target a few players in each tier, you can adjust regardless of how reckless or disciplined your leaguemates are. You won’t get every player you want at the exact prices you want, but you’ll give yourself high-upside options and the ability to pivot when things get a little crazy.
