Who is Anthony Joshua's trainer? Team Usyk link-up for Jake Paul fight explained image

Anthony Joshua returns to the boxing ring for the first time in 15 months when he takes on YouTube disruptor Jake Paul in a Miami money-spinner on Friday night.

Millions will tune in globally on Netflix to observe the peculiarity of a former two-time unified heavyweight champion and Olympic gold medalist facing a 13-fight novice who has mostly boxed non-boxers.

Joshua has taken some time out and undergone elbow surgery since he was catastrophically battered and stopped by fellow Briton Daniel Dubois at Wembley last September.

Not for the first time in the aftermath of a career setback, Joshua has opted to change trainers. Here's everything you need to know about how an old rival will help to guide what are presumably the final stages of AJ's career.

Who is Anthony Joshua's trainer?

Against Jake Paul, Anthony Joshua's corner will be run by Iegor Golub, one of several coaches and sports performance experts who are part of Oleksandr Usyk's training team.

Golub was an amateur teammate of Usyk and Vasily Lomachenko and is best known for his work training another of that fabled Ukraine 2012 Olympic squad, former WBO lightweight champion Denys Berinchyk.

However, Golub will be part of a collective effort, as explained by Usyk's camp manager Serhii Lapin. "It’s not one person. It’s a team — a head coach, an assistant, and several strong specialists. A structured system where each is responsible for their part," he told Ready to Fight.

Alongside Golub, strength and conditioning coach Jakub Chycki and veteran cutman Russ Abner will be in Joshua's corner on fight night. Usyk will not be present, but a Rocky Balboa-Apollo Creed style link-up has not been ruled out for future fights.

Asked by ESPN if Usyk would corner for Joshua, Lapin replied: "For championship fights -- I think yes."

Which coaches have trained Anthony Joshua?

Iegor Golub will be the fifth head coach in a Joshua corner in the 33rd fight of his professional career.

Both of Joshua's heavyweight title reigns were helmed by Rob McCracken, who the boxer first worked alongside when he was part of the Great Britain amateur setup.

After Joshua's shock defeat to Andy Ruiz Jr. In June 2019, Joshua brought assistant coaches Angel Fernandez and J oby Clayton into his camp. They worked alongside McCracken for the rematch win over Ruiz and a successful defence against Kubrat Pulev.

Defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in September 2021 prompted a more thorough rethink, although Fernandez remained part of the team with Robert Garcia for the rematch against the Ukrainian great 11 months later.

Even though Joshua produced an improved performance and gave Usyk one of the toughest nights of his career, defeat prompted another rest. For his 2023 wins over Jermaine Franklin and Robert Helenius, Joshua worked with Derrick James.

Saudi Arabia's dramatic entry into boxing fuelled Joshua's next move as a Riyadh Season slot against Otto Wallin was hastily arranged for December 2023. Training with James in Texas was not practical, schedule-wise, so Joshua formalised his arrangement with former Tyson Fury coach Ben Davison.

Working under Davison. Joshua looked back to his explosive best against Wallin and boxing novice Francis Ngannou, but he was floored four times on the way to a round five loss against Daniel Dubois.

These relentless coaching changes have not yielded results overall. His record from the first Ruiz defeat is six wins and four losses. If Joshua's quest to join the elite club of three-weight world champions is to be realised in 2026, the Team Usyk link-up has to bear fruit.
