Brayden DeVito's senior season would make a good high school career for most football players.

But for the Shelby QB, it's just the culmination of an epic career about an hour north of Columbus. For four years, DeVito has been everything for the Whippets, and now heading into the state semifinal, the journey isn't done yet.

On Friday night in a win over Galion, though, DeVito reached an incredible milestone. He surpassed 200 career high school touchdowns, when you count passes, runs, receptions and defense. It's at 201 TDs and counting.

Check out these career stats, via the Mansfield News Journal's Jake Furr:

  • 12,689 passing yards
  • 124 passing TDs
  • 4,445 rushing yards
  • 72 rushing TDs

This season, DeVito has thrown for 3,038 yards and 39 TDs to go with 1,160 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns. That's in just 35 quarters and a lot of running clocks as Shelby has cruised all season long.

It's as good a case as any in the state for the Ohio Mr. Football honor.

Ironically, DeVito's biggest competition may also be in Division IV, and is also an Air Force commit. Indian Valley's Grady Kinsey is the running back version of what DeVito has been as a quarterback.

IV and Shelby are in opposite state semifinals. If they both made the final, it'd be a fitting way to determine Mr. Football.

Of course, many in Ohio will say Mr. Football should come from a larger school. But D-IV isn't small. It's the middle division out of seven.

And besides, sometimes a player rises above his division. Like Kinsey at IV, DeVito has done that for Shelby.

He arrived as a highly touted freshman and delivered on the hype and then some. DeVito won't ever be forgotten in Shelby, whether he gets that final major honor or not.
