Djokovic bombshell: Tennis legend announces shock split ahead of 2026 Australian Open image

Just two weeks out from the 2026 Australian Open, former world number one Novak Djokovic has sensationally announced he is splitting with the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA) which he co-founded in 2019.

The 10-time Australian Open champion took to X explaining his reasons were linked to transparency and governance issues.

“After careful consideration, I have decided to step away completely from the Professional Tennis Players Association. This decision comes after ongoing concerns regarding transparency, governance, and the way my voice and image have been represented,” Djokovic posted on Monday morning Australian time.

“I am proud of the vision that Vasek (Pospisil) and I shared when founding the PTPA, giving players a stronger, independent voice - but it has become clear that my values and approach are no longer aligned with the current direction of the organization.”

It is believed the friction can, at least in part, be traced back to legal action launched by the PTPA last year against several of the game’s governing organisations including the ATP, WTA and International Tennis Federation.

At the time Djokovic indicated he did not agree with all elements of the anti-trust lawsuit.

While fans initially feared the Serbian star may be stepping away from tennis altogether, a follow-up post from the 38-year-old quickly put minds at ease.

“I will continue to focus on my tennis, my family, and contributing to the sport in ways that reflect my principles and integrity,” Djokovic assured.

“I wish the players and those involved the best as they move forward, but for me, this chapter is now closed.”

Djokovic will enter the 2026 Australian Open ranked world number four and requires just one more win to secure 100 career victories Melbourne Park.
