Nick Kyrgios still alive at Australian Open: Star to play another match image

Nick Kyrgios may be out of the Australian Open doubles - but his campaign at Melbourne Park is not over.

The enigmatic Australian is set to play in the mixed doubles first round with US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez on Friday night.

Kyrgios and Fernandez will feature as the last match on KIA Arena - which won't begin before 5:00 PM (AEDT).

The duo takes on Neal Skupski - the doubles world no.9 - and Desirae Krawczyk in the mixed doubles format with a huge crowd likely present.

Canadian world no.23 Fernandez famously lost the 2021 US Open final to fellow teenager Emma Raducanu.

Fernandez also reached the quarter-finals of the 2022 French Open, but hasn't been to the fourth round of a major since.

Both Fernandez and Kyrgios promoted their doubles partnership via a post on Instagram with Kyrgios admitting he doesn't care about what he says.

"Do you see how it’s incredibly offensive?" Fernandez joking asked

In a dubbed voice, Kyrgios responded: "Yeah, that’s why I said it."

Kyrgios - with Thanasi Kokkinakis - lost in the first round of the Australian Open doubles to Jason Kubler and Marc Polmans.

He didn't play the main singles draw after mutually agreeing with Tennis Australia not to receive a wildcard.
