Nick Kyrgios, Ashleigh Barty, John Millman and Andrew Whittington all had their tournaments ended - with only the latter managing to win a set.

Australia's top ranked player, Kyrgios was forced to retire with a hip problem when down 6-3, 6-4 to unseeded Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

The controversial talent admitted he might need surgery on the troublesome injury complaint but it hadn't got to that stage just yet.

"I was feeling it (hip) a lot, it was hindering my performance a lot," Kyrgios said in his post-match press conference.

"It is not career ending or anything like that, I just need time.

"I would do everything possible to avoid (surgery) - I’m obviously a bit scared, but I don’t think I’ll need it at the moment."

Barty gave a good account of herself against world no.5 Ukrainian Elina Svitolina but was eventually overcome 7-5, 7-6 (8).

Millman had no answers against world no.2 Rafael Nadal - going down 6-1, 6-3, 6-2 while Whittington managed to win the first set against Brazil's Thiego Monteiro before crashing out 4-6, 6-3, 7-6, 7-6.

Australia will have Daria Gavrilova, Bernard Tomic, Jordan Thompson, Thanasi Kokkinakis and Arina Rodionova in action on day two.
