Naomi Osaka arrived at the US Open seeking a resurgence. Was Monday's fourth round win her breakthrough moment?

Osaka made quick work of Coco Gauff, defeating the 2023 US Open champion and No. 3 seed in straight sets to advance to the quarterfinals. Gauff entered Monday having only dropped one set through her first three matches at the US Open, but uncharacteristic mistakes set her back against the 27-year-old Osaka.

For Osaka, the win pushed her into uncharted territory in the aftermath of a 2023 hiatus. Osaka is headed to the quarterfinals of a grand slam event for the first time since the 2021 Australian Open, moving one step closer to reclaiming her place as one of the most intimidating players in the world.

Osaka is set to face either Marta Kostyuk or Karolina Muchova in the quarterfinals as the spotlight once again fixates on the four-time grand slam champion.

The Sporting News tracked live scoring updates and highlights from Monday's fourth round match between Gauff and Osaka at the 2025 US Open. Check out all of the key moments you might have missed.

Coco Gauff vs. Naomi Osaka live updates, results, highlights from 2025 US Open fourth round

"I had so much fun out here," Osaka says on court. "I was in the stands two months after giving birth to my daughter, watching Coco. I just wanted the opportunity. This is my favorite court.

"I played a match in Montreal where I had to save two match points. Ever since then, I've felt that anything was possible. Honestly, I look up to her [Gauff] a lot. The way she conducts herself is really special. To be able to be a role model at such a young age is a gift.

"I was really locked in. I felt like everyone wanted to watch a really great match, and I hope you got that."

Gauff embraces Osaka at the net and then races from the court before Osaka has even packed her bag. That was a chastening match for the American.

Coco Gauff 3-6, 2-6 Naomi Osaka — OSAKA WINS: The crowd tries to lift Gauff as she eases to 30-0, but another unforced error off the backhand seems to drain the energy again. She gets to 40-15, but Osaka is relentless from the baseline, and Gauff throws in three consecutive groundstroke misses to hand Osaka a first match point... and she takes it! Gauff, off balance, sends a forehand that barely makes it to the net. Osaka is into the quarterfinals!

Coco Gauff 3-6, 2-5 Naomi Osaka: At 15-15, Gauff comes to the net to try to disrupt Osaka, but there's simply no stopping her right now. The American clips the top of the net on the next exchange, and there's almost an eye-roll as the ball drops her side. Osaka sees it out, and she's a game away.

Coco Gauff 3-6, 2-4 Naomi Osaka — BREAK: Gauff goes for a big second serve and throws in double fault number six. At 15-30, she mishits a forehand off the rim of the racquet, and Osaka has two break points. Osaka pounces on a first serve this time, and the rally ends with Gauff hitting the net with a speculative backhand! Osaka breaks.

Coco Gauff 3-6, 2-3 Naomi Osaka: Gauff is 15-0 on the Osaka serve for the first time, but the former champ looks unperturbed. Two more big serves brings up game point, and she holds once more.

Coco Gauff 3-6, 2-2 Naomi Osaka: Gauff has certainly raised her level this set, and the crowd appreciates it. There's a big cheer as she fires down another unreturned serve for 40-0. Naturally, she follows that with a double fault — her fourth of the match — but Osaka sends her next forehand long.

Coco Gauff 3-6, 1-2 Naomi Osaka: Another blistering rally ends in a superb backhand winner from Osaka. Gauff was maybe still thinking about that as she sends a routine forehand long. She holds to love again.

Coco Gauff 3-6, 1-1 Naomi Osaka: Fabulous defending from Gauff sees her come through the best rally of the match. She's scampering around the court now, forcing Osaka to go for the lines and, crucially, missing. The drop shot at 30-15 works this time, too. A few signs of encouragement here.

Coco Gauff 3-6, 0-1 Naomi Osaka: Gauff gets a look at the second serve on the opening point, and the return hits the bottom of the net. The crowd murmurs its disappointment. She does much better with a big forehand return at 40-0, and then forces the Osaka backhand error. Is there a chance here? Well, there was, but she hits the net again after getting into a rally. Still, that was better.

Second set

Gauff is going off the court during the break. She needs a big regroup.

Coco Gauff 3-6 Naomi Osaka — BREAK, FIRST SET OSAKA: An audible sigh rings around Arthur Ashe Stadium as Gauff slaps a simple forehand into the net. A double fault follows, and it's 15-30. She tries a sliced forehand and Osaka pounces. Two set points... and it's another double fault! Osaka takes the first set!

Coco Gauff 3-5 Naomi Osaka: Coco Gauff is one of the greatest defenders in the world, and she cannot get a read on this Osaka serve. This is awesome from the two-time former champion.

Coco Gauff 3-4 Naomi Osaka: Gauff ROARS as she wins a rally with a thumping crosscourt backhand while off balance. Osaka applauds. Gauff wins the next two points by moving Osaka around the court until she misses. She's digging in here.

Coco Gauff 2-4 Naomi Osaka: Osaka holds to love again. She's dropped one point on serve so far. Gauff needs to find a way to hang in here and hope Osaka's level drops.

Coco Gauff 2-3 Naomi Osaka: Osaka guesses right at 15-15 but mishits a forehand and nearly takes out a ballboy by the umpire's chair. She then loses a baseline exchange, which might give Gauff a little confidence boost. That serve is still an issue, though, and it's Osaka who looks like the better mover early on. At deuce, Osaka doesn't do nearly enough after a poor drop shot from Gauff, and the American comes through.

Coco Gauff 1-3 Naomi Osaka: Gauff gets a first point against the serve, a positive approach forcing Osaka to go long off the forehand. But the glimmer of hope of an early break back is short-lived.

Coco Gauff 1-2 Naomi Osaka: Gauff responds in kind with a love service game. Now, can she make some inroads on the Osaka serve?

Coco Gauff 0-2 Naomi Osaka: A hold to love for Osaka. Strong start.

Coco Gauff 0-1 Naomi Osaka — BREAK: Osaka breaks in the opening game! Gauff has had concerns on her serve and they show themselves right off the bat here.

First set

Here we go!

2:20 p.m. ET: "I'm really happy to have another opportunity on this court," says Gauff. "I've learned a lot about myself [this week]. There's no pressure." Think it's fair to say nerves will not be a problem today.

2:04 p.m. ET: And that match is over! What a win for Auger-Aliassime. Osaka and Gauff have been warming up and will be out on the Arthur Ashe court shortly.

1:44 p.m. ET: Auger-Aliassime is two sets and a break up against Rublev, so we could see Gauff and Osaka on court before too long.

12:30 p.m. ET: These two last met at the US Open back in 2019. Osaka knew then that Gauff was heading for stardom.

11:30 a.m. ET: We're looking at a start time of around 1:10 p.m. ET today, depending on how long the match between Felix Auger-Aliassime and Andrey Rublev takes.
