With more entrants, more stars and more ways to qualify, the AO 1 Point Slam is now being held at prime time.

What is the AO 1 Point Slam? Format explained

A coin toss will determine who serves and receives at the beginning of each match.

Amateurs get two serve attempts, but professionals only get one.

Whichever player wins the point will progress to the next round, while the loser will be eliminated.\

How many players will be in the AO 1 Point Slam Final?

After a qualifying process (explained below), 48 players will compete in the AO 1 Point Slam Final.

It will feature:

  • Up to 12 current ATP Tour Professional Players
  • Up to 12 current WTA Tour Professional Players
  • Up to 8 Wildcards
  • 8 State Championship winners
  • 8 Qualifiers

When is the AO 1 Point Slam Final?

The AO 1 Point Slam Final will be held at 7:00pm (AEDT) on Wednesday, January 14 at Rod Laver Arena at Melbourne Park.

It will be held in primetime in 2026 after being staged during the day in 2025.

Who will compete in the AO 1 Point Slam? What is the qualifying process?

32 players will be chosen for the final as either ATP, WTA or wildcard entrants.

Eight players reach the final as champion of their state - with that qualifier decided state by state.

Eight players will qualify via a knockout competition that will occur on January 12 and 13.

That qualifying competition will feature amateurs, professional players, wildcards and civilians attending the tennis.

Five professional tennis stars have committed to playing in the AO 1 Point Slam final.

Any other professionals or wildcards will be confirmed closer to the final.

The Australian Open singles main draw matches for men's and women's commences on Sunday, January 18 at 11:00 AM (AEDT).

However, the qualifying for the men's and women's singles main draw will start on Monday, January 12 and be completed on Thursday, January 15.
