Alex de Minaur has reached the quarter-finals of grand slam tournaments on five occasions - but has never made a semi-final.
However, the Australian might not have a better chance to reach the last four than he is about to get at the US Open.
De Minaur is currently preparing for a fourth-round match against 435th-ranked Leandro Riedi on Tuesday (AEST).
The 23-year-old Swiss talent should not be underestimated, but a routine victory will be expected by De Minaur against a player who needed to qualify to make the main draw at Flushing Meadows.
De Minaur would have been expecting a semi-final against third seed Alexander Zverev, but the German's elimination opens up his draw.
The Aussie would face either Zverev's vanquisher - 25th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime - or 15th seed Andrey Rublev.
Both of those opponents would be a tough match for De Minaur, but present a much more winnable match than against Zverev.
De Minaur's five quarter-final losses have come against formidable opponents - starting at the 2020 US Open, when he was blitzed by eventual champion Dominic Thiem.
Four years later, Zverev knocked out De Minaur of French Open 2024 before reaching the final, while at Wimbledon in the same year, the Australian was forced to withdraw prior to playing Novak Djokovic.
At US Open 2024, De Minaur was eliminated by current world no.5 Jack Draper, while Jannik Sinner was his tormentor at the most recent Australian Open earlier this year.
Despite having a 1-2 record against Auger-Aliassime, De Minaur won their last encounter at the Rome Masters last year and he would be a strong favourite to win the match.
His record against Rublev is 4-4, but the Russian's unpredictable form - having dropped out of the top 10 in the last 12 months - would see De Minaur enter the match with confidence.
Over to you, Alex.
