Toa Samoa have suffered a major setback ahead of the Pacific Championships, with strike centre Taylan May ruled out of the tournament after tearing his quadriceps.

The 24-year-old was named in Ben Gardiner’s initial Samoa squad alongside brother Terrell, but the injury has dashed hopes of a reunion on the international stage.

May is expected to spend the next six weeks in rehabilitation before linking up with new club Wests Tigers for pre-season training.

Blow for Gardiner’s star-studded Samoa

The loss of May is a blow for Samoa’s plans heading into their opening clash against the Kiwis in Auckland, especially given the strength of Gardiner’s squad, which includes nine State of Origin players, among them Brian To’o, Jarome Luai, Payne Haas and Junior Paulo.

May’s absence will force a reshuffle in the backline, with Izack Tago and Deine Mariner set to form a dynamic centre pairing. It’s another frustration for the explosive outside back, who was keen to make his first international appearance since 2022.

Meanwhile, veteran Josh Papalii returns for Samoa after a three-year absence, beginning what he calls a two-year “mission” to lead his country to a historic World Cup triumph. The 33-year-old will anchor a formidable forward pack that also features Haas, Jeremiah Nanai and Jaydn Su’A.

Samoa open their Pacific Championships campaign against the Kiwis at Go Media Stadium this Sunday.
